SEO Linguistics: Updates, Changes, Glitches, Semantics, & NOISE

March 28th, 2009

A lot of our best SEO tips are shared on the blog here. That strategy originally came to be because my original business model (for this site) was to sell an ebook, and it was hard to stuff everything inside 1 ebook and expect it to come out congruent, especially

while selling it to a wide audiencewhen revising it many timeswith SEO touching upon so many other disciplines like psychology, sociology, public relations, branding, advertising, content creation, information architecture, social networking, algorithm testing, etc.

Google Update Underway

March 22nd, 2009

I’ve had to call a few clients to proactively talk them off a ledge and I thought that perhaps I’d do well to post some recent going’s on at Google up on the blog for everyone. There is an update underway over at chez Google. There appear to be at least 3 sets of data going around and a simple Refresh can provide different results for the same search depending on the datacenter you happen to hit.

Buggy Google Pagerank Update

March 22nd, 2009

I’ve heard from several clients today who had their page ranks change both for the better, and worse (my own hardware website went from a PR5 to a PR4). However it seems that a re-occurring bug where Google drops the page rank of internal pages that deserve to be ranked has snuck into this update. After most page rank updates I usually check out one of the previous employers websites to see how their page rank distribution is. Currently of all their pages the homepage, and two of the categories pages have page rank the rest of their website reports as being unranked so not even a PR0. Hopefully we will see a corrective page rank update in the next few weeks.

Latest Firefox Update Causes Problems With SEOmoz

March 29th, 2008

Posted by Fluxx

Starting last night into this morning, we’ve been getting reports of people who have recently updated their version of Firefox to the new 2.0.0.13 release and now get a blank screen when they come to SEOmoz.  We’re still working on what the exact issue is with our site and why upgrading Firefox breaks it,  but we do know that if you delete the SEOmoz “login” cookie you have in Firefox and then try to load the site again, it works.

Re-Ranking the SEO Blogosphere (and My Updated Firefox Sidebar)

November 12th, 2007

Posted by randfish

Over the last few weeks, I’ve realized that I really need to optimize my processes for working. It’s been a long, steady slog, but I’ve finally got at least one item nailed down, and since it was so popular last time, I figured I’d once again share my Firefox Sidebar. Of course, this means I’m also re-ranking the blogs that I read (old list here), trimming many off the list and adding a great number of new ones, too. I’ll share my sidebar first, then get into the blog list more specifically.

Aggregate Detail on the Numbers from Google’s October 2007 Toolbar PageRank Updates

November 6th, 2007

Posted by Mel Gray

Just a little under two weeks ago, we received numerous reports that a very large number of sites had experienced a sudden drop in Page Rank. Many immediately began claiming that Google had rolled out an update for its rank formula to penalize for paid links. Others played down these reports offering that their own sites had experienced no change at all.

Aesthetic Google PageRank Update in Google Toolbars Worldwide!!!

October 25th, 2007

Search Engine Land recently listed a bunch of sites that had their PageRank scores manually edited for selling links. Of course, if you are the publisher of one of these sites, you don’t care about an algorithm relevancy score so meaningless that it is edited by hand. You care about traffic.

SEO for Firefox Updated to Include Compete.com Data

October 23rd, 2007

I just updated SEO for Firefox to include Compete.com website rank and Compete.com monthly uniques. If you leave Compete.com in on demand mode it tends to work quite well. I am also going to ping the guys at Compete.com to ensure the automatic mode gets to be pretty reliable too. Compete.com data is far better than Alexa because it has less of a webmaster bias.
