I’m back in Seattle after a short trip to NYC for SMX Social Media. I live-blogged a couple of sessions on Tuesday and tried to live blog the “Evangelist - The Marketer’s Role in SMM” session, but I lost my post before I published it. (And no, I didn’t save it. Yes, I am dumb.) I did cover Rand and Liana Evans’ presentations for the Micro Communities session for Search Engine Land, plus there are lots of other recaps there and throughout the web.

After a quick break, we’re back at SMX Social Media with “A Marketer’s Guide to Social Bookmarking & Tagging.” Guillaume Bouchard from NVI is up first. He starts off with his token in-joke for French speakers. People laugh (in French: “hoh hoh hoh”). He talks about how all of the social platforms leverage one another and cites an example of how he got a link bait piece on reddit that moved to Digg, StumbleUpon, and other social sites. He says you can leverage a popular story and get a few more good stories out of it.

Having just wrapped up my presentation for Linkbait: Chumming for Traffic on Social Media Sites (I linked to Vanessa Fox’s session coverage on Search Engine Land in case you want a recap), I thought I’d turn the tables and live blog Extra! Extra! The Social News Sites.

Yesterday, I received an email from Christ Bennett at 97th Floor. He told me about an awesome social media tool they were due to release tomorrow (now today, funnily enough), that lets you tell how many times a page you’re currently viewing has been submitted to / voted upon at the four biggest social media services. However, far from being just a Firefox toolbar extension, the tool also shows up on Digg, Reddit, StumbleUpon and del.icio.us pages to show you how many votes (or reviews, in the case of StumbleUpon) each individual story has received at the other three sites. The counts from the other sites will show up on all the pages within the site, not just the homepage stories.

Of even more interest is this capstone project is Google-sponsored which means many of these features are likely to be utilized in a future Google property.

As a result, it has taken a while to view my footage and pick out all of the best tips to share with you. The SEO Meet SMM seminar was paneled with an all-star cast of Rand Fishkin, Neil Patel and Cindy Krum. Between these three incredibly bright people, and my own experience and research I have put together this whitepaper on how to use social media marketing (SMM) to your advantage. I believe this is the most current (timely), accurate and cutting edge information available for those who want to start marketing in this field.

Since linkbait is recommended by search engineers as a good strategy to market a site, it is probably pretty safe, right? Not always true.
The link bait advice is a bit disingenuous. Not only is linkbait expensive and unpredictable, and sometimes undermines the brand value of the site publishing it, but there are also times when sites get penalized for being too successful with it. Brian Turner mentioned that viral links could kill your Google presence, and I though it makes sense to share a couple specific examples of how linkbait can leave you looking (or at least feeling) like a sucker who took the bait.
