SEOmoz’s Unusual Search Terms from the Month of November

December 27th, 2007

Posted by rebecca

As a special pre-holiday treat, we decided to share our more long tail search terms from last month (November 2007). Enjoy!

How to read minds: 225 searches. Ever wonder how Rand seems to have so many eerily accurate predictions about the future of search engine algorithm changes? Well, so do 225 other people…Titties: 52 searches (thank Lucas for that one)Better than google: 51 searches. Meh, we already knew that SEOmoz was better than Google, sliced bread, and real butter combined (mmmmm, butter and Google sandwich…)How to speak English: 41 searches. Sadly, we only offer a course on “How to Speak English with the Occasional Injections of Superfluous U’s into Words,” taught by our favo(u)rite Kiwi, Jane.Barry bonds before and after: 22 searches. Sounds like a Jeopardy category waiting to happen…Good questions to ask: 22 searches. If you have to search for this, then you fail as a human being.Mud wrestling: 19 searches. How did they know about our team building exercises?Simpsonized pictures: 18 searches. I only threw this in because I geekily think it’s cool that we rank for something Simpsons-related.What is an encyclopedia: 13 searches. Seriously? Seriously?!20 questions to ask a guy: 10 searches. Um, ask them anything. It’s not like Jane Goodall with the apes, for crying out loud.the incredibles: 10 searches. Hooray, we rank for a Pixar film! list of every website: 9 searches. Google returns a page saying “Displaying one of eleventy billion results.”

The Launch of Private Messaging on SEOmoz

Today I’m pleased to announce the release of Private Messaging here at SEOmoz.  Starting now, you’ll be able to private message other users using the sexy “Private Message This User” button (pictured on the right) on their profile page.  You’re also able to compose a message without clicking the button at the Write a Message page.  Just start typing in the username of the person you’re trying to message and the right person should come up automagically.

SEOmoz’s Venture Capital Deal Closes + Financials for Jan-Nov 2007

November 21st, 2007

Posted by randfish

Today marks the completion of our first ever external funding - $1.1million (sorry, no Shoemoney shot here). I wrote about this move twice before, asking in August for your feedback on whether to take venture capital and in September about our decision to move forward with the deal. At that time, I also promised that we’d have a recap of our financials for the year-to-date, much as we did for 2006. Sadly, this will be the last time I’m able to share this much about the inner workings of SEOmoz this publicly. However, we’re moving away from the traditional consulting model and thus our numbers are probably less relevant and interesting than, say, Jim Boykin’s (just saying, Jim, if you feel like sharing, I’m sure the folks would appreciate it). And, in good news, talking with Michelle today (with the Seahawks game on pause), we will still be sharing lots of cool stats and keeping true to our moz-ethos post-investment. This means the sharing certainly isn’t over, it just probably won’t be this all-encompassing again (with regard to finances, that is. We’ll still reveal way too much about everything else).

A Humble Request for All SEOmoz Staff and Readers

October 4th, 2007

Posted by Jac

I have a humble request. Fall has come, so I am back in school for the last year. I enrolled in a magazine writing class because I thought it would be fun. So far it has not been fun at all, but our first assignment is to profile a person, business, or organization. I lovingly think of SEOmoz as all three, in a way, and I knew right away that I wanted to do my article on it. One of the points of my article will be that SEOmoz is revolutionary in its accessibility. Prove me right by helping me to answer the following questions. I would be very grateful. We are also encouraged to submit these articles to various magazines, so you never know where your luminous words may end up (though I would definitely let everyone know if that becomes the case!). I’d love to hear from staff members and anyone, really.

Explaining the Winner of the SEOmoz Landing Page Contest (Part 2 of 2)

October 2nd, 2007

INTRO from Rand: Paul was the winner of our Landing Page Competition and authored a post last week on his personal style.

This blog post is going to take on a very simple format:  first of all I’m going to present my landing page as a “good cop persuader” and refer to the work of Gerry Spence.  Then, I’m going to present my landing page as more of a “bad cop salesman” and refer to the work of Dr Robert Cialdini.  I’d love to give you more, and I had lofty ambitions for this post, but that’s all I’ve got space for.

This week we’re diving into the hiring game - trying to find the people who will help us make both the free and premium content on the site even more valuable over the weeks and months to come. Jane’s in charge of hiring our new customer service / office manager and Jeff’s doing double-duty, seeking out both a web developer and a GUI designer. We’ve already received one resume that’s so incredibly cool, I’ve just got to share:
