A lot of (mis)marketing techniques are more covert though, through the use of

Most CMS systems today are capable of generating clean URL’s. Unless you are dealing with newspapers or magazines where existing legacy systems it’s almost a non issue. However I came across two incredibly horrible URL’s in the same day

Nice Idea, Google!
About a month ago I launched an SEO tool named the Website Health Check tool. The launch was quite successful, so Google decided to block my tool, then added its features to Google Webmaster Central. You shouldn’t artificially manipulate the link graph or screw with other people’s sites, unless you are Google.

Looking for Christmas oriented keyword research? You would be hard press to find a better list of hot toys this year than to look at Amazon.com’s holiday toy list. Google also offers their Google Trends product, which will likely confirm the validity of Amazon’s list as the holiday season draws near. Both of these lists work to reinforce the market leading position of the associated companies, and editorialize their content based on user feedback.

I’m back in Seattle after a short trip to NYC for SMX Social Media. I live-blogged a couple of sessions on Tuesday and tried to live blog the “Evangelist - The Marketer’s Role in SMM” session, but I lost my post before I published it. (And no, I didn’t save it. Yes, I am dumb.) I did cover Rand and Liana Evans’ presentations for the Micro Communities session for Search Engine Land, plus there are lots of other recaps there and throughout the web.

After a quick break, we’re back at SMX Social Media with “A Marketer’s Guide to Social Bookmarking & Tagging.” Guillaume Bouchard from NVI is up first. He starts off with his token in-joke for French speakers. People laugh (in French: “hoh hoh hoh”). He talks about how all of the social platforms leverage one another and cites an example of how he got a link bait piece on reddit that moved to Digg, StumbleUpon, and other social sites. He says you can leverage a popular story and get a few more good stories out of it.

Having just wrapped up my presentation for Linkbait: Chumming for Traffic on Social Media Sites (I linked to Vanessa Fox’s session coverage on Search Engine Land in case you want a recap), I thought I’d turn the tables and live blog Extra! Extra! The Social News Sites.

Radiohead announced that you can pay whatever you like for In Rainbows, the latest album from the best band in the world. A TIME article states:
Thom Yorke told TIME, “I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one. And, yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say ‘F___ you’ to this decaying business model.”

Last week, the New York Times opened up their 13 million document archive and dropped their Times Select program (which allowed access in exchange for a fee). This move was covered extensively in the blogosphere and even influenced other giants in the online publishing world (like Murdoch on the WSJ) to question their own content strategies.
