Internet Marketing in the Movies: Are People Starting to "Get" It?

May 26th, 2009

Posted by rebecca

Since I’m a movie buff and an Internet marketing nerd, I often notice Internet marketing and search mentions in various movies, and I always pay attention to the movie URL shown in trailers (my two recent favorites: the URL for Sacha Baron Cohen’s upcoming Bruno film was www.meinspace.com/bruno, but it looks like now it’s redirecting to MySpace.com, and the URL for I Love You, Beth Cooper is www.iloveyoubethcoopermovie.com, making me wonder why they had to append “movie” to such a specific URL). Recently I came across two examples where the movie industry referenced or directly utilized Internet marketing/social media marketing, and it got me wondering if Internet marketing is finally starting to become more mainstream (meaning fewer people will look at you with blank faces as you try to describe what you do for a living).

Is Social Media Marketing Illegal?

May 8th, 2009

The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has some rules about online marketing that may surprise you - they certainly surprised me.

Recently, SEOmoz’s own Sarah Bird was interviewed by Eric Enge on a wide variety of contract and legal topics. As I was proudly browsing through the piece, I was especially curious about what Sarah had to say around marketing on social media networks:

FTC To Clamp Down On Social Media Marketing

April 14th, 2009

Some sites like MySpace have begun policing ads:

The main reason that they killed the dating ads was that people were using copyright images as well as girls under 18 to advertise for CPA sites. It got to a point where the ad approval team couldn’t police them anymore. The dieting ads were killed cause the FTC is just starting to crack down on the fake blogs that promote the diet offers.

Ivell Marketing & Logistics: Reputation Management and Social Media Mess

March 23rd, 2009

Just about anyone who has worked in a large office has seen the company they work for make rash decisions about how firing an employee will affect their company. Today I read about Ivell Marketing & Logistics who recently fired someone because of the contents of her Facebook account.

Viral Marketing is Stupid

March 29th, 2008

Posted by Danny Dover

Yesterday, I was arguing with my friend about the existence of one sight or sound that is universally funny. He argued that since different cultures find humor in different things, there couldn’t possibly be one example of something that is funny to everyone. Unconvinced, I started searching for the holy grail of funny. Immediately, I went on YouTube and starting browsing my favorite videos. Eventually, I came to the monkey video below.  No matter how many times I watch the video, I still find it funny. There is something instinctively funny about seeing how dumb a monkey is compared tothebrillianceofhumans.

I Just Spammed You (or, Why Media Transparency is a Bogus Marketing Strategy)

March 21st, 2008

The First Rule of Marketing

Some people hype transparency as the only effective solution for long-term sustainable marketing success. After they are already successful they can hype such false ideals and get praised for them, which only adds to their misguided notion of marketing. The truth is everyone wants to be influenced, but nobody wants to feel like they were influenced.

How Owning Multiple Sites Can Help or Hurt Your Marketing Strategy

March 20th, 2008

Because I own BlackHatSEO.com and spent literally 1 day building and marketing it, a year ago a reporter writing for The London Times decided to do a feature article about me. Hey I rank #1 and own the exact match URL so I must be the guy, right? Well maybe (just don’t ask Matt!)…but bonus good deal for me on getting the feature, other than some of the regretful out-of-context quotes that were attributed to me.
