As diligent Search Marketers know, it’s quite a good idea to get links from strong/trusted sites pointing to yours and combine this with building a single link or two from a large number of smaller websites.
For some people, this second part can seem the most daunting - whilst there is a person you can talk to if you want a link on every page of timesonline.co.uk, there’s nobody you can call or email to get a link from every small website or blog. The difficulty of building such links is compounded when you realise that this work should be done using anchor text of the term you want to rank for.
Choosing a domain name for a new project can be a little daunting.
All the good names are gone. Once you find something acceptable, you’ll have to be sure you can live with it for a long time. And what about the implications for SEO?
Lately I’ve noticed a lot of questions in Q&A centering on purchasing expired domains. A lot of our members have expressed interest in buying old domains for a variety of prices (some are cheap, some are going for upwards of $50k) and want some advice on what to do with the domains once they’ve been purchased. I’m no domainer, nor am I an expert in such a business tactic, but I generally recommend one of three different options for an expired domain (and would love to hear more if you’ve got any). Anyone that has a high ranking websites knows the better they rank, the more spam they are going to receive, and we are no exception to this rule. Personally I can find it amusing to browse through some of the more unique spam to see what sort of tactics they use to convert their recipients. One of the better scams I’ve seen is the Internet Brand / Internet Trademark scams, where someone claims to represent a domain registration company who has someone interested in buying your domain name as their trademark. Today I received another one of these scams but in this one they were referencing the financial crisis as a secondary scare tactic. Luckily their grammar is terrible, there is an excess of white space, and it is based completely on fiction which should raise red flags with anyone that reads it. Continue Reading »
Fuel up on that caffeine because today I want to discuss how trademark law plays out in the course of a domain name dispute. We’re going to compare and contract the Anti-Cybersquatting Consumer Protection Act with I-CANN’s Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy. Continue Reading »
Wecome to Legal Monday! I wanted to kick off 2008 by discussing an exciting, developing case on domain tasting. This case has three things that I think make for a sexy case. (1) It involves at least one well known party. (2) It exposes a cunning money-making scheme or business plan (3) Finally, It’s obvious that this scheme should be illegal, but it’s not obvious which law is being broken. Continue Reading »
In the past any large company could use subdomains as an effective reputation management strategy. As eBay and others have aggressively used subdomains to dominate branded AND unbranded search results, and Google has improved their sitelinks technology, any relevancy gain by treating subdomains as a separate site has gone away. Google is going to start treating subdomains like subfolders, and limit the number of results from any site to two.
How Domain Names Play a Role in SEO & SEMMany marketing and advertising costs are recurring. Re-registering domain names is a minimal cost, but many domains (especially .com names) get type in traffic worth thousands of dollars a year. Some get type in traffic worth thousands per day. And this traffic stream is defensible from search engine algorithmic swings.

Google recently increased their number of sitelinks to 8 and now list them in a 2 column format. To visualize the value of this, consider that I have a decent sized monitor and only 1 listing not controlled by me appears above the fold when searching for SEO Book.
