Thesis is a Wordpress Framework Not a Design and Why That Matters for SEO

May 6th, 2009

When I mention Thesis a lot of people don’t really get the value of it, to them Thesis is just a design. However they don’t understand Thesis and miss the real value of  Thesis as a framework.
First off we need to understand what a good HTML markup and framework can do. With a good framework […]

Web Design for ROI: Chapter 3, Managing for ROI

April 1st, 2008

Posted by rebecca

In an earlier post I had mentioned that I started reading Web Design for ROI by Lance Loveday and Sandra Niehaus (check out their website for more information on the book). Today I thought I’d share some tidbits from chapter 3, Managing for ROI.

Chapter 3, Manging for ROI, provides a list of considerations and suggestions on how to manage your website for optimal ROI.

January 12th, 2008

I love SearchEngineJournal’s Annual Awards. I think it’s terrific that even a small community like search marketing can have its own mini-version of the Oscars each year :) It’s fun, it builds friendly competition, and it inspires those of us who compete to work harder and earn our keep.

Rewriting the Beginner’s Guide: Part 4 - The Basics of Search Engine Friendly Design & Development

December 16th, 2007

Posted by randfish

For the next few weeks, I’m working on re-authoring and re-building the Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization, section by section. You can read more about this project here.

Search engines, as we’ve shown above, are limited in how they crawl the web and interpret content to retrieve and display in the results. In this section of the guide, we’ll focus on the specific technical aspects of building (or modifying) web pages so they’re optimally structured for search engines and human visitors. This is an excellent part of the guide to share with your programmers, information architects, and designers, so that all parties involved in the site’s construction can plan and develop a search-engine friendly site.

December 5th, 2007

When launching new tools or information products it helps to create a professional logo that people can spread around. But sometimes you are short on time or just want to get the idea out the door. Even if you don’t have a lot of time or money you can still get a logo that looks good.

Even the little widget pictures on my homepage were part of a $10 image set.

November 25th, 2007

A couple years ago a friend of mine who sold ad inventory for premium publishers told me the key to making his banner ads work was to not make them look like banners, unlike the below tongue in cheek effort:

Finding a Good Web Design / SEO Firm (When You Already Are One)

November 6th, 2007

Posted by SEO Columbus

This afternoon I have the privilege of interviewing a web design firm for a fairly large project.  I’m currently in discussions with a company to become the COO of a nicely funded semi-startup, and unfortunately the owners of the firm have already selected a web design firm (thankfully I’m not bound to keep them in any way).  As one of the final steps before I take this role, in which I would be responsible for just about everything from the site to the office wall colors, I asked to talk to this firm myself to make sure that I feel comfortable with them and their abilities.  I have a feeling that they may have “buzzworded” their way into the gig by talking to these owners who are not extremely technically experienced.  My experience so far may help those of you that have web design or SEO firms to avoid the same mistakes.
