The number of subscribers is the main metric of a blog’s popularity (I am pretty sure everyone knows that but I needed an introductory sentence
). Recently, I’ve been exploring and experimenting with some creative looking blog RSS buttons and came to an interesting conclusion: no matter how unique and prominent it looks, people still tend to prefer that standard little Feedburner button that humbly asks to subscribe.

ESPN recently decided to stop selling remnant ad inventory via automated ad networks / exchanges.
“We’re heading down a path where it no longer suits our business needs to work with ad networks,” said Eric Johnson, executive vp, multimedia sales, ESPN Customer Marketing and Sales. Sources say that ESPN would like to rally support from other publishers behind this move and ultimately tamp down ad networks’ growth. Turner’s digital ad sales wing is rumored to be considering a similar move, though officials said no decisions are imminent.

Everyone who is popular gains detractors along the way. And detractors tend to flock together and vote for other people who share their opinions. That trend virtually guarantees any valuable brand will have dirt ranking somewhere in the search results. The more valuable the brand gets the more people who will gun to unearth the dirt.

I don’t watch much television. It’s silly really. I bought a big flat screen HDTV DVR OMG WTF television before I could really afford such things and I only regularly watch two shows. Tonight, one of my two shows will go off air for the last time, leaving me with only American Idol, which I encourage you all to link to from now on as American Idle (and also to check out American Idol’s SEO lookalike).

We’ve been working pretty hard on pulling together the numbers from 3000+ responses to the SEO Industry Survey, graphing the results, and writing up some thoughts in an article on the SEO Industry Survey. We also picked a winner for the iPhone and will be contacting this person privately to notify him or her. Being the new guy at SEOmoz, the gang thought it would be a good idea for me to pull myself out of the networking closet and introduce myself while I introduce the results of the survey.

Today I sat in on a webinar taught by David Szetela, the founder of Clix Marketing. He gave some great tips about common PPC and paid search mistakes, and I thought I’d share them below.
Don’t mix search and content campaigns. David recommends turning off the content network and not mixing search and content, which he said will bleed away money.Search keywords are not the same as content keywords. Your keywords should describe the target site, not necessarily your product or service. Think about what words would appear on the pages where you want your content ads to appear. Some of his tips regarding ad groups and bids are:

Google’s leaked documents defining spam state:
Final Notes on Spam
When trying to decide if a page is Spam, it is helpful to ask yourself this question: if I remove the scraped (copied) content, the ads, and the links to other pages, is there anything of value left? if the answer is no, the page is probably Spam.

After they bid low and lost the C block of wireless spectrum Google has started talking to the media about using unlicensed whitespace. From the WSJ:
Google said that the white space, located between channels 2 and 51 on TV that aren’t hooked up to satellite or cable, offer a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to provide ubiquitous wireless broadband access to all Americans.” In addition, opening up the spectrum would “enable much-needed competition to the incumbent broadband service providers,” Mr. Whitt wrote.
Google has done its own white-space testing and submitted its results to the FCC in December. Philips also submitted a testing device to the agency last year, which returned satisfactory results.
